For CFOs & HR Leaders in NYC

401(k) Advisor in New York City

Old Slip Capital advises New York employers on their 401(k) and other company retirement plans from 40 Wall Street, Floor 28, New York, NY 10005. We work with the people who carry the plan day to day — the CFO, the head of HR, and the retirement plan committee — as an independent fiduciary advisor.

What a plan committee gets from us

  • Investment menu design, fund selection and quarterly performance monitoring
  • A written Investment Policy Statement and a committee oversight charter
  • Committee agendas and minutes documenting the reasoning behind each decision
  • Annual fee and plan benchmarking against comparable plans
  • Recordkeeper and provider oversight, including service and fee reviews
  • Fiduciary training for the committee and education for participants
  • A secure online fiduciary briefcase holding the full documentary record

Why a local advisor still matters

Retirement plan oversight is a meeting-driven discipline. Investment reviews, fee discussions and fiduciary training all go better in a room than on a call, and a committee that meets its advisor face to face tends to keep a cleaner record. Being in Lower Manhattan means we can sit with your committee quarterly without it becoming a production.

Independent, with no product to sell

We are an independent registered investment advisory firm — not a recordkeeper, fund company or insurer, and not affiliated with one. That independence is the whole point of hiring an outside advisor: the recommendations your committee documents should be made on the plan's behalf, not a corporate relationship's.

Common questions

What does a 401(k) advisor in New York actually do for our company?
We act as the retirement plan's investment advisor and fiduciary partner. That means building and monitoring the fund menu under a written Investment Policy Statement, running the committee meeting cycle with agendas and minutes, benchmarking recordkeeping and advisory fees, overseeing the provider relationship, and educating both the committee and participants. The CFO and HR team keep the plan; we supply the research, process and documentation behind it.
Do you only work with New York companies?
We are based at 40 Wall Street in Lower Manhattan and most of our plan sponsor clients are in New York City and the surrounding metro. We serve plan sponsors nationally, but committees in the city can meet with us in person, which many prefer for quarterly investment reviews.
How large does our plan need to be?
We work with plans across a wide range of sizes, from growing companies setting up their first plan to established committees overseeing substantial assets. What matters more than plan size is whether the sponsor wants a documented, independent process rather than whatever the recordkeeper's bundled advisor provides.
Are you affiliated with a recordkeeper or fund family?
No. Old Slip Capital is an independent registered investment advisory firm. We are not a recordkeeper, a fund company or an insurer, and we are not owned by one. The menus we build and the providers we monitor are selected on the plan's behalf.
How do we get started?
Most engagements start with a review of your current plan: the investment menu, the fee structure, the committee's documentation and the provider agreement. We tell you what we find, including where the plan is already in good shape, and you decide whether to move forward.
